Journey back to 1963 with this nostalgic Apple Apricot Loaf featuring dried fruit, fresh apples, and warm spices in a moist, tender cake. This vintage Oakland Tribune recipe creates a versatile treat perfect for breakfast or teatime. The combination of sweet-tart fruits and subtle allspice creates complex flavor in an easy-to-make loaf. Slice thinly for delicate tea sandwiches or enjoy with a smear of butter for simple pleasure!

Ingredients
2/3 cup boiling water
1 cup dried apricots, finely diced
2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. allspice

1/2 cup shortening
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg, beaten
1 cup finely diced apple
1/3 cup chopped walnuts
milk - see Directions for amount needed

Directions
Pour boiling water over the apricots; let stand.
Mix and sift together the next 5 ingredients.
Drain apricots, saving the liquid.
Pat apricots dry with a paper towel.
Add enough milk to apricot liquid to make 2/3 cups.
Cream shortening with sugar.
Beat in egg.
Add dry ingredients alternately with liquid.
Fold in apples, apricots, and walnuts.
Spoon into a well-greased loaf pan, 8 x 5 x 3.
Bake at 350° for 55 to 60 minutes, until a toothpick put in comes out clean.
Turn out of pan onto a wire rack to cool.
Slice and serve.
